A first 20 GWh plant
Initially, the site with a capacity of 20 GWh should be built in Jianyang, a city in the southwest of Sichuan province. It is not yet clear what type of lithium battery should be produced there.
According to the Chinese media Autonews Gasgoo, Eve Energy wants to invest 10 billion yuan, or the equivalent of approximately 1.36 billion euros, in this battery factory.
The construction of the factory in Jianyang, should be completed within two years.
In order to coordinate its activities, Eve Energy wants to found a company around the project at the local level, with a share capital of at least 100 million yuan (about 13.6 million euros).
The entire construction will take place in a single phase.
A 23 GWh plant built in Qujing
According to information from Yicai Global, the 23 GWh plant is to be built in Qujing in southern China’s Yunnan province within 18 months. The total of this investment amounts to 5.5 billion yuan, or the equivalent of approximately 748 million euros.
Cylindrical lithium iron phosphate batteries will be produced locally.
The construction of the plant should start as soon as the approval procedures have been settled.
BMW supplier Eve Energy
The Chinese manufacturer began to make itself known in Europe mainly by through a contract with BMW. Eve Energy has indeed been selected as one of the suppliers of cells that the automaker will use in its future New Class electric models. The other confirmed vendors are CATL and Envision AESC.
Significant increase in production capacity in China
Regarding the current generation of cells, Eve Energy is in the process of significantly increasing its production capacity in China. In addition to the construction of new factories mentioned above, other sites are planned or under construction in Chengdu, Yuxi and Jingmen. It is not confirmed if among all these future sites, one will be dedicated to production for BMW.
According to official information from BMW last September, Eve Energy was commissioned to build two factories to supply the German manufacturer. The latter has not specified so far whether these should be built inside or outside China.
However, due to the strong expansion of capacity in China, it is likely that BMW and Eve Energy plan to build at least one factory dedicated to the German manufacturer in China.
Towards a factory in Hungary?
It should also be noted that Eve Energy is associated with the Hungarian city of Debrecen. According to information from the end of March 2022, the company has signed a non-binding letter of intent with the local municipality to acquire 45 hectares in the industrial zone to build a factory there for the production of cylindrical cells. However, since that date, no new information has been heard on this subject.
