In March 2022, road fatalities remained on the rise in France (mainland and overseas) with 257 killed. A figure which represents a respective evolution of + 22.38% and – 7.55% compared to March 2021 and March 2019, according to Onisr. The same month, the European Commission also published a report on road fatalities in Europe. This would have increased slightly between 2020 and 2021.
The Onisr recorded 4,596 injury accidents in March 2022, i.e. + 11.77% and – 2.57% respectively compared to March 2021 and March 2019. Among the 5,875 victims, 5,618 people were injured in March 2022 , i.e. +11.03% and –4.37% compared to March 2021 and 2019.

Metropolitan France: 231 dead in March 2022
In mainland France, road deaths increased by 22.87% in March 2022 compared to March 2021. But it fell by 9.4% compared to March 2019, with 231 deaths recorded by the police. In addition, 4,352 bodily accidents were counted in March 2022 (+ 12.22% compared to 2021 and – 2.3% for 2019). In these accidents, 5,322 people were injured, i.e. respectively + 11.81% and – 3.2% compared to March 2021 and 2019.
As between January 2021 and 2022 and between February 2021 and 2022, travel in March 2022 was 10% higher on average in mainland France compared to March 2021, according to the Center for Studies and Expertise on Risks, environment, mobility and development (Cerema). A development that may explain the increases in road accidents and fatalities.

Mortality on the rise for most users
In March 2022, road fatalities also increased for the majority of user categories. And this, whether pedestrians (+ 57.14% compared to March 2021), cyclists (+ 12.5%), moped riders (+ 40%), motorcyclists (+ 20%), motorists (+ 18.09%) and truck drivers (+ 200%).
This increase is observed above all among people aged 65 and over (+ 11.11%) and 18-24 year olds (+ 23.33%), whether in urban areas (+ 1.61%) or outside urban areas (+ 39.09%). Conversely, road mortality for people under 18 fell by 35.29% between March 2021 and 2022. It also fell on the highway by 6.25%.
Compared to 2019, road fatalities fell in all categories of users except cyclists (+20% between March 2019 and March 2022) for all types of age groups and on all types of road surfaces.

Overseas: 26 killed in March 2022
Overseas, the police recorded 26 deaths in March 2022. Road deaths thus increased in March 2022 by 18.2% and 13% compared to March 2021 and 2019.
With 296 injuries recorded in March 2022, this indicator, on the other hand, fell by 1.3% compared to March 2021. However, accident rates increased by 4.3% compared to March 2021, with 244 personal injury accidents recorded in March 2022 .
