In February 2022, road fatalities remained on the rise in France (mainland and overseas) with 238 killed, i.e. + 28.65% compared to February 2021 and – 10.86% compared to February 2019, according to figures from the Onisr. Remember that, in its monthly barometer, the organization always compares its 2022 data to the year 2021 and to 2019, due to the traffic conditions in 2020 affected by the health crisis.
The police also counted 3,902 personal injury accidents in February 2022, i.e. + 16.51% and – 9.17% respectively compared to February 2021 and February 2019. Among the 5,064 victims, 4,826 people were injured in February 2022, i.e. + 17.39% and – 8.06% compared to February 2021 and 2019.

Metropolitan France: 212 dead in February 2022
With 212 killed on the roads of mainland France in February 2022, road fatalities increased by 20.45% compared to February 2021 and fell by 16.5% compared to February 2019. In addition, 3,694 personal injury accidents were recorded in February 2022 (+17.68% compared to 2021 and –9.7% for 2019). In these accidents, 4,550 people were injured in February 2022, i.e. respectively + 18.4% and – 8.7% compared to February 2021 and 2019.
This increase in road accidents could be explained in particular by “travel in February 2022 higher by 10% on average in mainland France compared to February 2021”, indicates Cerema. An explanation already put forward by the organization to explain the increase in road deaths between January 2021 and 2022.

Mortality according to categories of users
In February 2022, road fatalities also increased for most categories of users: cyclists (+ 75% compared to February 2021), heavy goods vehicle drivers (+ 66.67%), motorists (+ 30.21% ) then pedestrians (+20.83%). This increase is observed above all among those aged 65 and over (+ 18.75%) and those aged 18-24 (+ 11.76%). And on all types of road: + 22.92% in urban areas, + 17.76% outside urban areas and + 28.57% on motorways.
Conversely, the road mortality of moped riders and motorcyclists fell by 40% and 12.90% respectively in February 2022 compared to February 2021, as did that of those under 18 (-63.64%).

Overseas: 26 killed in February 2022
The police also counted 26 deaths overseas in February 2022. Road mortality thus increased more drastically overseas than in mainland France in February 2022: + 188.9% and + 100% compared to February 2021 and 2019.
With 276 injuries recorded in February 2022, this indicator was also up 3% compared to February 2021. However, accident rates fell by 1% compared to February 2021, with 208 injury accidents recorded in February 2022.
