CAF has unveiled the list of ten nominees for the title of best African player of the year 2022.
Who will be elected best African player of the year 2022? Ten days before the CAF Awards ceremony, which will take place on Thursday July 21 in Morocco, the Confederation of African Football unveiled the list of ten nominees on Monday. And, unsurprisingly, Senegal, winner of the African Cup of Nations for the first time in its history at the start of the year, is very well represented there.
Mané like in 2019?
Three Teranga Lions are indeed among the finalists selected: Kalidou Koulibaly (Naples), Edouard Mendy (Chelsea) and Sadio Mané (ex-Liverpool). The new Bayern Munich striker, crowned in 2019 during the last edition (due to the health crisis, the CAF Awards did not take place in 2020 and 2021, editor’s note)is a big favorite in his own succession.
Salah and Mahrez outsiders
But other players can claim this title, starting with the Egyptian Mohamed Salah, best player and co-top scorer in the Premier League with Liverpool, and the Algerian Riyad Mahrez, champion of England with Manchester City. Achraf Hakimi (PSG, Morocco), Sébastien Haller (Dortmund, Ivory Coast), Naby Keita (Guinea, Liverpool), and Karl Toko Ekambi (OL, Cameroon) are also part of the selection.
