Seeded n°5 on the clay court of Bastad, Pablo Carreno-Busta won in two sets against Stan Wawrinka, invited by the organizers.
They were both coming off a disappointing season on grass, which saw them eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon, and they met again on Monday for the fourth time in their careers. And while Stan Wawrinka had won their previous three matches (the last in 2017), this time it was Pablo Carreno-Busta who won against the Swiss in the first round of the Bastad clay court tournament. Seeded No. 5 in the Swedish tournament, the Spaniard won 7-5, 6-4 in 1h24, serving 63% of first serves and without having the slightest break point to defendD. “PCB” took the opposing service of Wawrinka (290th in the world and invited by the organizers) at 5-5 in the first set and 2-2 in the second. Even though he had 10 aces during the encounter, the three-time Grand Slam winner gave in twice, so he’s already out. We will see him again next week at Gstaad, when Carreno-Busta will face his compatriot Ramos-Vinolas or the Argentinian qualifier Etcheverry in the next round.
