Winter Olympics in Beijing: showcase for hydrogen
In recent years, Beijing has made active efforts to develop hydrogen industries, to advance the low-carbon transformation of the city’s energy mix.
As part of the organization of the edition of the Winter Olympics in February 2022, Beijing had already deployed 1,528 fuel cell vehicles. Last August, 10 hydrogen supply stations were built.
Beijing wants to develop the use of hydrogen vehicles
The authorities are now planning to expand the use of hydrogen vehicles. Wishing to boost their growth in public transport, various logistics applications, waste management and postal services.
Acceleration of the deployment of charging stations
In an attempt to meet hydrogen vehicle refueling needs, Beijing also plans to accelerate the deployment of refueling stations. These will be implemented in its most important districts such as Fangshan, Yanqing, Haidian, Shunyi, Daxing and Changping. Some will also be installed in its economic and technological development zone.
By 2025, Beijing will thus put into service a total of 74 stations of this type which will be able to supply 148 tons of hydrogen per day.
Our opinion, by leblogauto.com
Hydrogen fuel cell research and development programs have been introduced in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone. A large number of companies dedicated to innovation in the hydrogen energy industry have already settled there. Viewing hosting the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games as a growth opportunity, Yanqing, a competition area, has accumulated experience in fuel cell vehicle operation and hydrogen supply.
Beijing has joined forces with the neighboring city of Tianjin and Hebei Province to build a whole industrial chain to promote the development of the industry of hydrogen energy. Last October, AIC Maxus launched 80 fuel cell minivans in Shanghai through Xiangdao Chuxing, a mobility platform from Chinese automaker SAIC. The hydrogen-powered Maxus Mifa is part of a growing line of Fuel Cell vehicles (FCEVs), backed by Chinese government support. Toyota is also trying to take a stand in China.
