An industrial future in Europe synonymous with job losses
Automotive News thus details Ford’s plans at European level, indicating how the manufacturer envisages its industrial future on the Old Continent…. But above all how the automobile group wishes reduce staff of its German production site with more than 1,000 employees.
Employees from different divisions of the automaker will be affected, including development, manufacturing, marketing and sales, and administration. Employees at Ford’s headquarters in Germany and at the German plant in Cologne are expected to lose their jobs.
The end of some models
As part of its transformation, Ford will discontinue models such as the Fiesta and Focus, which have been the company’s main products for more than two decades. The once popular Mondeo, D-segment vehicle, with strong sales in Germany and the UK, is already making history. The S-Max and Galaxy, which share the same platform with the Mondeo, are also retired.
100% electric model by the end of the decade
Ford wants to have a 100% electric model in its range in Europe by the end of the current decade.
By then, the manufacturer will market combustion engines from its American portfolio, which notably includes the Mustang, the Explorer, and the Bronco. In parallel, Ford is also investing around $2 billion in its Cologne plant where two electric models based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform will be produced from 2024.
Our opinion, by leblogauto.com
New step in Ford’s desire to distance itself from Germany, while favoring the production of EVs… to the chagrin of employment across the Rhine. It should be remembered that after having launched two electric vehicles based on the Volkswagen group’s MEB electric platform, Ford will in the future use its own technology for its future electric cars.
Ford has indicated that its passenger van range in Europe will become all-electric by 2030 and it expects two-thirds of its commercial van sales to be electric or plug-in hybrid by the same date.
