A few weeks after Rivian, a second highly anticipated electric pick-up begins its deliveries to customers in North America: the GMC Hummer EV. GM is taking the opportunity to also deliver its first Brightdrop EV600 vans to FedEx.
Heart of the American market, the pick-up will also go electric. And it may even be he who will drive the market. Evidenced by the intense activity on the subject from both historical manufacturers and “new entrants” who are eyeing this juicy market, real cash cow of the big manufacturers. Tesla with its Cybertruck or Rivian, but also Lordstown and Bollinger. There are also projects that seem a little less successful like Atlis, Edison Future, Hercules.
For its part, GM is trying to have it both ways. A classic electric pickup with its Silverado and Sierra, and a more “disruptive” model. He has indeed chosen to revive the name Hummer, therefore electric. The high-end pick-up unveiled as a prototype has therefore just started its series production and deliveries, a few weeks after the Rivian R1T. GM, which we thought was late, therefore caps Ford or Tesla at the post…
Admittedly, this Hummer EV has nothing to do with the ultra-economical electric car with its 6 meters long, 2.10 m wide, its 3 motors for 1,000 hp and its 200 kWh of batteries for 563 km of autonomy (EPA )… The expected volumes remain relatively low. But this electric Hummer is above all intended toillustrate with drums and trumpets the change in the GM dinosaur. The Ultium battery architecture that it inaugurates will then be taken over by a number of slightly more reasonable GM models. In addition to the various pick-ups, it will start from the top with the Cadillac Lyriq or Celestiq. Then came models from Chevrolet, GMC and Buick.
Brightdrop, electric mobility at GM
Along with Rivian, which is working on its van for Amazon, GM has delivered the first copies of the Brightdrop EV600 van. Announced in January 2021 at CES, the model also uses Ultium battery technologies. The first customer delivered is FedEx. The American company has indeed participated in the development of the vehicle dedicated to delivery services, and has ordered 500 copies. The Brightdrop EV600 is produced in CAMI’s Canadian factory in Ingersoll, Ontario. A site that also produces the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs.
