Lewis Hamilton apologizes
The seven-time world champion immediately apologized to his mechanics.
Q3 of qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix was marked by the crash of Lewis Hamilton. The driver sent his Mercedes crashing into the barriers. He gets by without boo.
Who was going to start from pole position in the Austrian Grand Prix which takes place this weekend on the Spielberg circuit? It couldn’t be Lewis Hamilton as the seven-time Formula 1 world champion finished in the gravel on Friday, right in the middle of Q3 qualifying. The 37-year-old driver made a small mistake at turn 7 and was unable to straighten his vehicle, which crashed head-on into a protective barrier.
No worries, however, for the seasoned pilot who has had time to reduce his speed sufficiently before hitting the guardrail. His Formula 1, on the other hand, was largely crushed at the front and on the right side, enough to make any resumption of the qualifying session impossible for the Englishman. Lewis Hamilton finished fifth in Q1 and third in Q2. He immediately apologized to his mechanics for having damaged his vehicle.

Russell misses too…
And bad luck for Mercedes since once the red flag was put away and Q3 restarted, it was George Russell’s turn to have lost control of his car. There was only 2’31 left to run. Pole position finally went to Max Verstappen who placed his Red Bull ahead of the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Junior.
