There are requests that cannot be refused! Going out and about with the last atmospheric 100% thermal Lamborghini V12 in history is a privilege. Yes, you read that right: the last one.
Don’t panic, it’s not the last Lamborghini nor of the brand’s latest V12, but, after almost all of its competitors, the Italian manufacturer with a strong German accent for more than a decade has warned: the future of the V12 will go through its electrification.
A sacrilege for some, of course, who already see the bull turning into a Landaise cow. Ferrari has however proven that the transition to the hybrid does not mean the death of the little horse. Still, it’s a shock. In a burst of nostalgia, I could remind you of the story of this mythical V12. What’s the point ?
We must take advantage of the present moment and look ahead. Experience also teaches that one must be wary of one’s prejudices. I remember that twenty years ago, I feared that the arrival of Audi & Co engineers would sign the death warrant of the “real” Lamborghinis.
Traveling the back roads around Sant’Agata Bolognese, I shed tears, convinced that they were going to betray the genes. The Aventador has more than proven the opposite, and brilliantly! The Germans brought the touch of rigor that was missing. Now, the chassis no longer twists in all directions at the slightest bump.
Normal, it’s a carbon monohull: hard to do better! The four-wheel drive allows you to go out in rainy weather without getting too hot, the cabin smells of Alcantara, the carbon-ceramic brakes avoid squeezing your buttocks, and so on. And this, without taking away an ounce of nobility from the V12, which has kept all its ardor, its rage, its character and its vibrato. Let’s close the parenthesis.

On the menu of the day, a mix between the Aventador S and the spectacular SVJ, with even more power in the back. For this ultimate representation of the Aventador, the 6.5 l “Longitudinale Posteriore” peaks at 780 hp, which earned it its nickname of “LP 780-4”.
It’s no less than 40 hp more than the S, and it’s a 10 hp bonus over the SVJ, just to compensate for the few kilos less of the latter and to claim the same weight / power of 1.98 kg/hp.
OK, that’s 20 hp less than the Countach LPI 800-4, but there’s enough to warm your butt. To discipline the cavalry, all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering of the S are de rigueur. It would still be a shame to see a numbered copy end badly…
Because to increase even more the bids to come and give it a collector’s label as soon as it is released, Lamborghini applies a well-known recipe among supercars: only 350 coupés and 250 Ultimae Roadsters will come out of the Sant’Agata Bolognese factories.
But don’t let go of your favorite magazine to get the checkbook, they are already sold out. At the time of leaving the parking lot of the concession, I do not lead off. Not like “my” Aventador, which, with its 2.28 m from retro to retro, has quite a build.
But since it’s my lucky day, the Italians sent us a roadster. Not just any: the 001/250! To make my life easier and make the most of Symphony No. 12 in V major, I remove the roof. A manipulation still old-fashioned, that is to say manual, which is surprising on a car of this price, but which has all its charm.
With 780 hp and 73.4 mkg of torque, the question of performance is quickly addressed: Lamborghini announces a 0 to 100 km / h in 2.8 s and a maximum speed of 355 km / h, figures that we do not have not had the opportunity to check on circuit.
And on the road, as always, impossible to touch the limits of such a machine, which will allow critics to ask the eternal question: “What’s the point of having 780 hp if it’s not to use it?” As an answer, suggest that they settle down on board for a while.
Admittedly, some presentation details are starting to date, but sportiness still transpires as much. There’s still a good chance the big start button and red fighter jet safety-pin trigger will impress them.
A simple press, followed by a shot of well-dosed gas to wake up then animate all of a sudden the 12 connecting rods, will make them turn their heads. It cannot be otherwise, unless you are deaf. And even. The sensations, the very emotion, distilled by this V12 are such that the arm hairs instinctively stand on end and a long shiver runs through the spine. It overwhelms all the senses.
From 2000 rpm, it’s “brutal”, as Audiard would say! At 4,000 rpm, it shoots hard, at 6,000, it becomes explosive, and at 8,500, it shoots everything. And you with it! At a time when it is fashionable to play the card of silent sensations in electric, my God it is pleasant to find a living being, speaking, singing!
While an electric machine is like a schoolyard with children whose teacher asks them to play in silence: nonsense! In addition, sorry, but me, the V12 turns my guts upside down, not upside down! That is to say, without making my heart ache to make me nauseous like the accelerations of an electric car do.
No. There, he sends shivers like when you fall in love, as the Canadians say. So of course, you have to get the couple in the red zone, but precisely, that’s the best! His music carries everything in its path, including the reproaches already made in our pages to his partner, the single-clutch robotic gearbox, which is a bit slow for him.
And since she struggles to keep up with the times, she sometimes proves to be unnecessarily brutal. However, I can’t even blame him, as this defect contributes to the temperament of the Aventador and to the experience. The other miracle is to see how much the animal lets itself be tamed.
Admittedly, a Lambo V12 is not the tool for the occasion to get the cake on Sunday, but driving it at a normal pace in Strada mode is not unattainable.
The latest Lambo V12 atmo 100% combustion is bestial, and we also hope that its replacement will remain so, but the animal is not that wild. The difficulty lies more in maintaining a “normal” rhythm. Knowing that this is the last round of singing, difficult not to turn up the sound!
Perfection: this is the goal pursued by Bugatti in the design of the new Centodieci, its ultra-exclusive ten-unit special series of a hypercar that defies all automotive superlatives. Decryption. https://t.co/99rLZD9i4U

The opinion of Melina Priam
I still have discharges in the back! Admittedly, the Aventador is no longer very young, and it is not (anymore) the best of the best. But the Ultimae retains what makes the very essence of a supercar and which, alas, is doomed to disappear: an absolutely magical atmospheric V12. And just for that…
