A real Mercedes front end
Mercedes T-Class test+16
Optics similar to those of Class B
We grant you, we do not always find charm at first sight in a leisure activity vehicle. It must still be recognized that the manufacturers have made real efforts to change the perception visually. Rifter, Caddy, Tourneo Connect display a personality very clearly reminiscent of their respective brands.
Unlike the previous generation, here we will not confuse a T-Class with a Renault Kangoo by looking at the front. To tell the truth, one could even take it for a Class B. On the profile side, the German is distinguished above all by its wheels. The rear, on the other hand, is very close to the French, with a similar cutout of the lights.
Nice presentation

Nothing to do with the Kangoo…
The Stuttgart brand, on the other hand, wanted to mark its difference very clearly inside. This is why, in particular, the manufacturer has invested from the design stage, to adapt its “in-house” systems. Let’s be clear, we are on board a Mercedes, with the exception of the air conditioning unit taken from its French cousin. The regulars of the Etoile models are not out of place.
The dashboard with its round vents as found on a Class A, even incorporates the very complete MBUX. Unfortunately the size of the screen seems a bit small to take full advantage of it as in other models of the brand. We especially expect the T-Class in terms of modularity. And from this point of view, it does not disappoint. We actually wonder what we can’t load…
Space, and impressive modularity

Even with the cage, there is still room for luggage
Big bikes, dog cages, fridge… the T-Class can go from spacious family for 5, to utility with a hold of 2,390 litres. Wide sliding doors are obviously included. The layout possibilities are impressive. When you go back to an SUV, even the largest, you feel a little cramped compared to this Mercedes, which is more roomy than an S-Class.
The engines are rather modest, pending the full electric version EQT. Renault provides two diesels, available in two powers of 95 and 116 horsepower. We try the only gasoline available with 131 horsepower. Let’s say it right away, with this cavalry, it is not a question of hoping to compete with the GTi during a drag race.
Fairly well cushioned

There it still looks like a Kangoo
That being the case, one wonders if this engine is enough to easily transport goods or people when climbing a pass. On our course which was not hilly, it was difficult to hold a figure under 8 liters without forcing. With load on board, one or two additional units can be expected. We can only recommend the automatic transmission to facilitate daily driving.
Side frame, beyond a comfort of good quality, Mercedes brought its key. The damping settings here are different from those of the Kangoo. The German manufacturer wanted it a little firmer, for a better rigor of behavior. Honestly, you can’t say you’re driving a C-Class either, let’s not exaggerate. But you don’t see yourself on the roof either when you rush a little too quickly into a bend.

to summarize
The range starts at almost 30,000 euros. We can exceed 37,000 if we tick a lot of options and in particular the automatic gearbox, which seems to us quite essential to make life easier. Mercedes proves that you can afford a slightly less austere life on board, even in a MPV. Premium the T-Class? Maybe not. However, it is the most beautiful interior in its segment.
